A recent comment has prompted some more research into Shade Grown certification. We’ve pontificated a few times about organic and fair trade, but there are a number of other certifications out there. We have had more than one customer ask about which coffees were “Shade Grown”. What exactly is Shade Grown, therefore? We in tiny Buena Vista have our own troubles to contend with, and fortunately they do not revolve around the escalating McDonald’s and Starbucks competition. Our coffee at the Buena Vista Roastery is also $1.40, so I guess we’re right in line with these two, price-wise. I’ll have to check what the other places in [...] We at the Roastery compost all of our grounds, which still has not seemed like enough, primarily because our goats eat most of the other compostables and leave us with only grounds and chaff to turn. This doesn’t make for a very balanced compost pile.
